Crack a healthy Christmas, says Cancer Council

Heathy Eating

Cancer Council is urging Queenslanders to prioritise health and wellbeing this festive season, after new stats revealed one in 10 deaths nationally are caused by inactivity.

Australia was recently ranked 94 out of 131 countries for being physically active, according to the Global Observatory for Physical Activity’s latest Physical Activity Country Cards.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said Christmas shouldn’t be an excuse for Queenslanders to abandon their health and fitness commitments.

“For many of us, Christmas is a time to de-stress, have fun and relax with friends and family – which can often lead to overeating and an unhealthy holiday from regular exercise,” Ms Clift said.

“It’s important to plan and prepare early to enjoy a healthy and happy holiday period.

“Being physically active and ensuring a healthy diet every day, including during the festive season, reduces the risk of a range of chronic diseases, including some cancers.

“We encourage all Queenslanders to stick to the recommended alcohol guidelines of no more than two standard drinks per day.

“We should focus on feasting to feel good this festive season, not to feel full! Simple tactics like not opting for a second helping and learning to say no are critical at Christmas.

“Know your weaknesses and think about healthy alternatives – sticking to a healthy diet of fruit and veggies, wholegrains and lean meats will increase energy levels and happiness.

“Keep up your physical activity regime during the holidays too – it’s recommended all Queenslanders get moving on most, if not all, days of the week for optimum health.

“Why not introduce a backyard cricket game, a swim or a family walk around your nearest park to keep yourself active?

“Remember to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, especially with the hot weather predicted for Queensland, and stay SunSmart when outdoors and the UV Index level is three or above.

“It’s also important to encourage your friends and family to make healthy choices the easiest choices this festive season.”
