It’s one of the most iconic fundraising events to hit Queensland streets, shopping centres and businesses – Daffodil Day (August 22), the day thousands of generous communities across the state make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
While purchasing a pen or bunch of yellow flowers may seem like a simple gesture, it means you are brightening the life of someone touched by cancer by funding vital cancer research, prevention programs and patient support services.
Each year in Brisbane, around 9000 people are told they have cancer and sadly more than 2800 die from the disease.
In Australia, around 350 people are diagnosed with a life-threatening cancer each and every day.
This Daffodil Day, August 22, Cancer Council Queensland is calling on the community to show they care about beating cancer by purchasing a pen, pin, bear or fresh bunch of daffodils – and spreading hope.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said it only took a simple gesture to give hope for better treatments, hope for more survivors and hope for a cancer free future.
“A bright splash of yellow does more than light up the community – it means we are taking steps to beat cancer and to show our support to those affected,” Ms Clift said.
“We rely on the generous support of everyday Queenslanders to sell our merchandise and flowers on Daffodil Day and we are calling out for help once again.
“Get involved by purchasing merchandise or ordering a free pre-packed box of merchandise or flowers to sell to your colleagues, customers or community group.”
This Daffodil Day, Cancer Council Queensland hopes to raise $1.5 million to support its vital work in cancer research, education and patient support services.
The 2014 Daffodil Day range includes pens $6, daffodil pins $5, Dougal Bear $10 and fresh daffodils cost $7 per bunch.
