This Friday the gates of Ekka will open in preparation for nearly half a million Queenslanders, 145,000 strawberry sundaes, 185,000 Dagwood dogs and plenty of entertainment!
To help Queenslanders make the most of Ekka, Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan shared five top tips for a healthy day out.
“We know that Ekka is an annual highlight for thousands of Queenslanders – so why not make the most of it and keep your health and wellbeing in check at the same time?” Ms McMillan said.
“One, eat treats in moderation. If you indulge in a strawberry sundae, limit your sugar intake throughout the remainder of the day. There are plenty of healthy options on offer around the pavilions, so sample some of our finest, healthiest produce while you’re out and about.
“Two, get active. Walking around the showgrounds is the perfect opportunity to keep your health and wellbeing in check. Last year’s Ekka was spread across 22 hectares – so there are plenty of places to explore and stay active throughout the day.
“Three, stay hydrated. Pack a water bottle to keep up your fluids as you navigate the crowds. Being adequately hydrated will help you stay energised.
“Four, share the experience with friends and family. Spending a day with friends and family is a great way to boost your wellbeing and happiness levels. What better way to do that than at Ekka?
“Five, stay SunSmart. Pack the sunscreen to reapply and wear a broad-brimmed hat when outdoors. Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide to reduce your risk of skin cancer.
“Having a healthy lifestyle isn’t about a one-off choice – it’s about building healthy habits into your everyday schedule to improve your short and long-term health,” Ms McMillan said.
More than 27,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer each year.
Up to one third of all cancer cancers are preventable through simple lifestyle adjustments including eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, quitting smoking and staying SunSmart.
