The effects of inadequate sun protection are ugly – increasing skin cancer risk and premature aging – yet many Queenslanders neglect to prioritise sun safety every time they walk out the door.
Queensland is notoriously known for having the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Around 3,000 melanoma and 133,000 non-melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed each year.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said a new range of Cancer Council cosmetics, launched this month, would make sun protection easier.
“We have a range of programs in place to teach people about the importance of sun safety, now we’re making the actual practice itself easier to ensure best protection all year round,” Ms Clift said.
“The new range of Cancer Council cosmetics are 2-in-1, ensuring the wearer’s skin looks clear and healthy with broad spectrum SPF30 providing trustworthy protection.
“Sunburn can occur in as little as 15 minutes, and sun exposure can add up during the day, doing significant damage to our skin.
“We hope that our new cosmetic products, including foundations, lipsticks and BB creams, will make working sun protection into people’s everyday routine easier.”
Ms Clift said Queenslanders should be using all five sun protection measures when heading outdoors.
“Stay SunSmart by remembering to Slip on protective clothing, Slop on SPF30 or above broad-spectrum, water resistant sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek share and Slide on wrap-around sunglasses,” she said.
“As with all sunscreens, Cancer Council recommends re-application every two hours to ensure maximum protection.”
Cancer Council Queensland recommends all Queenslanders conduct skin checks regularly and if any new moles or spots are detected, or a mole or spot changes in shape, colour or size, visit a GP immediately.

The Cancer Council Cosmetics range consists of 75mL Face Moisturiser, 50mL Foundation, 50mL BB Crème, 200 mL Body Lotion, and Lipstick and Lip Gloss.
The Face Moisturiser gives a smooth finish and is a light, non-oily, moisturising, facial sunscreen for daily use (RRP $14.95).
