In 2023, a new era in cancer research funding began with the initiation of the Cancer Council Queensland Next Generation Cancer Research Fellowships. Replacing the ACCR grants scheme, this fellowship aims to support early career cancer researchers, fostering innovation and advancements in the field.  

We are thrilled to announce the 2024 recipients of Cancer Council Queensland Next Generation Cancer Research Fellowships. These researchers are each poised to make significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of cancer. 

Dr Jasmin Straube

Dr. Jasmin Straube from QIMR Berghofer, is set to embark on a project focusing on acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). With a funding period spanning 2024 to 2028, Dr. Straube’s research endeavors to identify vulnerabilities in leukemic stem cells carrying poor prognostic mutations, ultimately seeking to improve outcomes for patients with myeloid blood cancer.

Dr Mathias Seviiri

Dr. Mathias Seviiri, also from QIMR Berghofer, is tackling the complex landscape of skin cancer. His research, spanning from 2024 to 2028, aims to understand the genetic basis of treatment response and predict the risk of adverse events in patients undergoing treatment for melanoma and keratinocyte cancers. 

Dr Mostafa Kamal Masud

Dr. Mostafa Kamal Masud from The University of Queensland’s research focuses on the early diagnosis and monitoring of ovarian cancer through a portable and automated diagnostic device. This device, utilizing nanoengineered structures, aims to overcome current challenges and significantly impact OC detection and treatment monitoring. 

With innovative ideas and commitment to improving patient outcomes, these recipients represent the future of cancer research. At Cancer Council Queensland, we’re proud to provide the necessary funds to support their life-saving cancer research.
