Gympie family fight back against cancer at Relay For Life

Relay For Life candlelight ceremony

The Hosking family know all too well the physical and emotional impact of cancer.

Having endured three generations being diagnosed with cancer, the last 13 years have seen the family show a united front in the face of adversity.

In 2006 Marg Hosking’s husband Mac was diagnosed with a level four melanoma and thankfully he’s been cancer free for many years.

In 2012 their son Sam was diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma, a form of cancer in the mouth and their grandson Alex was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma.

Since surgery Sam has been cancer free, but tragically Alex died at age four.

“We have been blessed with very beautiful memories of our little grandson,” Marg said.

With such a personal connection to cancer Marg has been heavily involved in fundraising for Cancer Council Queensland.

She leads a committee of volunteers as the Chair of Gympie Relay For Life, which will be held on October 26-27 at Gympie Soccer Fields.

As well as dedicating her time as a volunteer, she also fundraises with her Relay For Life team ‘We can can Cancer,’ who have run a series of board game nights. Not only have these nights helped raise funds, but they have brought loved ones closer together.

“For $10 each, participants can have dinner and a fun night playing board games,” she said.

Celebrate. Remember. Fight back.
