Tele-workshop introduces cancer patients to relaxation therapy

This month Cancer Council Queensland will host a Learning to Relax Telephone Workshop – a first for the charity.

Many people facing cancer have said that learning ways to better manage stress has helped them cope, which is why Cancer Council Queensland is inviting Queenslanders to register for the workshop, which will be run over two sessions, on May 30 and June 6.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said the workshop would offer free, practical assistance on how to relay to Queensland cancer patients and their loved ones.

“We know how difficult the experience of cancer can be, not only for those diagnosed with cancer, but their carers, family and friends,” Ms McMillan said.

“Many people affected by cancer have said that learning relaxation techniques have helped them manage stress and helped them cope with their experience.

“Our Learning to Relax workshops are delivered by our experienced Cancer Counselling Services employees, who understand the psychological impacts of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

“These workshops are underpinned by research supporting the benefits of relaxation in reducing anxiety.

“Exploring stress responses and learning relaxation exercises can also be useful for managing challenges in daily life, regardless of age or situation.”

Cancer Council Queensland has held several face-to-face Learning to Relax Workshops in locations across the state over the past two years, but this is the first telephone workshop.

Ms McMillan said utilising telehealth strategies enabled the charity to make its support services more accessible to those who live in rural or isolated communities.

“It’s essential that Queenslanders affected by cancer receive the support they need, wherever they live in our state,” Ms McMillan said.

Registrations for the Learning to Relax Telephone Workshop can be made prior to May 28 by calling Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 or visiting
