Relay For Life turning the state purple for season two

Queenslanders are being called to put one foot in front of the other and walk towards a cancer free future at Relay For Life.

Cancer Council Queensland is officially launching its Relay For Life season two events this week – and are encouraging communities around the state to sign up for the one-of-a-kind fundraiser.

There are 24 Relay For Life events held between July and November for season two, from the Tablelands in Far North Queensland right down to the Gold Coast in the south.

This weekend, the first two events of the season will be held in Cairns and Gladstone.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said support of Relay For Life would ease the burden of cancer across the state.

“Funds raised at Relay For Life help our work in lifesaving research, prevention programs, and support services for those affected,” Ms McMillan said.

“With 27,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed this year across the state, we need every Queenslander to rally behind their local Relay, to help us continue this vital work.”

Relay For Life is a fundraising initiative where teams fundraise in the lead up to an overnight event. Team members then take turns walking around a track until the next morning.

“Relay For Life signifies that cancer never sleeps – so neither do we,” Ms McMillan said.

“We’re aiming to raised $2.5million this year – these funds will enable us to be here for Queenslanders affected by cancer every minute, every hour, every day.”

Participants also take part in on-the-day fundraising activities and ceremonies, like a candlelight ceremony to remember loved ones lost, and a ceremony to celebrate survivors and carers.

“Relay For Life is an emotional, empowering community event for a community cause,” Ms McMillan said.

“Hundreds of locals fundraising and walking for a cure can have an incredible impact on someone affected by cancer and provide hope for a cancer free future.

“So get your friends, family and colleagues together and join the Relay For Life movement today – together, we are stronger than cancer!”
