Relay For Life 2014 raises $4m for Cancer Council Queensland

Around 39,000 Queenslanders walked to give hope at Relay For Life events across the state this year – raising more than $4 million, and in turn, changing the lives of those impacted by cancer.

With the help of a dedicated army of volunteers and supporters, Cancer Council Queensland held 48 Relay For Life events throughout 2014, with the final two held last weekend.

Relay For Life is an 18 hour event involving teams of up to 15 people keeping a baton moving in a relay style walk or run overnight, in support of the one in two Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift thanked participants for their dedication to the cause and overwhelming generosity.

“To each and every person who laced up and took to the track this year to fundraise and give hope to our cancer survivors and lost loved ones – we thank you,” Ms Clift said.

“Around 24,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer each year, and with your help we can offer vital support and continue on our mission to beat cancer.

“Each step you take in the fight against cancer and every dollar you raise makes a difference in the lives of all Queenslanders affected by the disease.”

2014 Relay For Life teams can continue fundraising until December 31st, with all funds supporting Cancer Council Queensland’s cancer research, prevention and early detection programs, and patient support services.

Ms Clift said after a successful year, the charity looked forward to a new season of Relay For Life events which kick off in March 2015.

“Next year we hope that even more Queenslanders will unite in the fight and pledge to take part in a local Relay For Life,” Ms Clift said.

“Getting involved might only seem like a small way to make an impact, but your contribution makes a lasting difference to locals touched by cancer.”
