Cancer Council is gearing up to celebrate 30 years of its signature fundraising campaign Daffodil Day this August, calling on Queenslanders to lock the date in and prepare to wear a pin in support.
Cancer Council Queensland will celebrate the iconic fundraiser during the entire month of August, with the official Daffodil Day date falling on Friday August 26.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said Queenslanders could text to donate to the cause for the first time in 2016, and dedicate a daffodil in support of those affected.
“All Australians need to do is text HOPE to 1999 8877 and a $5/sms* donation will automatically be incorporated into their mobile bill,” Ms Clift said.
“A follow-up text message will enable Australians to personalise and share a daffodil dedication. Daffodil dedications will also be available via Facebook and on the Daffodil Day website.
“Daffodil Day raises funds for all Queenslanders, all cancers. All funds are invested into vital cancer research, patient support services and prevention programs statewide.
“More than 26,000 Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone, and about 8600 will die from the disease – we need to do all we can to support those affected.”
More than 1600 volunteers are expected to staff more than 230 volunteer sites across Queensland during the week of Daffodil Day, selling more than 800,000 fresh daffodils.
Queenslanders can buy a pin to show their support, donate online, text to donate, order a merchandise box to sell, volunteer on the day or buy merchandise at daffodilday.com.au.
“If you think one in two people diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime is one in two too many, get involved by showing you care this Daffodil Day,” Ms Clift said.
“Volunteer a few hours of your time to sell fresh daffodils and merchandise at one of your local sites on the day, or buy a pin or 30 year Dougal Bear to support those affected.
“Get involved and grow hope for Queenslanders affected by the disease this year – for someone you know who has been touched by cancer.”
The daffodil is the international symbol of hope for everyone affected by cancer.
Cancer Council Queensland hopes to raise $1.5 million during August and on Daffodil Day this year.
