Peppa Pig helps kids make sun protection fun

Cancer Council Queensland has teamed up with the iconic Peppa Pig to help kids Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide – the fun way!

New research* shows around 54 per cent of Queensland children aged five to 17 are sunburnt annually – with five per cent getting so burnt that their skin blisters.

But with the help of Peppa Pig and friends, Cancer Council Queensland aims to ensure Queensland kids get adequate protection from the sun.

Cancer Council Queensland has released a new range of children’s SPF 50+ sunscreen products featuring Peppa Pig on the bottle, including a 200ml spray bottle, a 75ml roll-on and a 50ml bottle.

The high protection, fragrance free, gentle lotion has been specifically designed for delicate skin and is ideal for children of all ages.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said it was vital for children to protect their skin, in order to reduce their risk of skin cancer later in life.

“We’ve teamed up with Peppa Pig to help keep Queensland children covered as they head outdoors to play,” Ms Clift said.

“As Peppa Pig has a big influence on children who watch the program, the partnership will help instill SunSmart behaviours that will stay with them for life.

“Damage to a child’s skin can occur in as little as 10-15 minutes on a summer day, and often before a sunburn appears on the skin.

“Sunburn is the sign of irreparable damage to the skin, and is much more than a simple inconvenience – it increases a child’s risk of skin cancer later in life.”

Sun protection is required when the UV Index is three and above. In Queensland, the UV Index is three and above all year round, so sun protection is required in every season.

“Children need to Slip on protective clothing, Slop on SPF30 or above broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on wrap-around sunnies – and it’s up to parents to help them,” Ms Clift said.

“When applying sunscreen, we recommend using one teaspoon of sunscreen per limb, front and back of the torso, and on the face and neck.”

Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world – around 370 new cases are diagnosed every day in the Sunshine State.

Along with being SunSmart, Peppa Pig will teach children about healthy eating and staying active as part of a partnership with Cancer Council.
