Accelerating collaborative cancer research in Queensland

Projects with the potential to accelerate the progress of cancer research in Queensland will share in $2.8 million through a new funding opportunity by Cancer Council Queensland.

Expressions of interest for Cancer Council Queensland’s Accelerating Collaborative Cancer Research (ACCR) grants are now open.

Two ACCR grants will be awarded in 2019. The grants will be of four years’ duration and will provide funding of $500,000 per annum for four years, comprising $350,000 per annum from Cancer Council Queensland and a cash contribution of $150,000 per annum from the Administering Institution.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said the grants would develop the capacity of high-quality cancer research groups in Queensland.

“A key priority for Cancer Council Queensland is to invest in Queensland-led cancer research with demonstrable potential to improve the outcomes for cancer patients,” Ms McMillan said.

“When researchers with the demonstrated ability to generate high quality research results come to us with innovative projects, we want to be able to fast-track their research as quickly as possible.

“Our hope is that through encouraging effective research collaboration between universities, health services and scientific research institutions, the ACCR grants will accelerate the progress of research translation and improve cancer control.”

Ms McMillan said applications would be accepted from research groups who will be conducting the research at a host institution in Queensland and where the first-named Chief Investigator is also working in Queensland.

The ACCR grants are replacing Cancer Council Queensland’s long-running Cancer Research Project Grants. Cancer Research Project Grants for 2019-2020 were spread between researchers at The University of Queensland, the Queensland University of Technology and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.

Expressions of Interest for the Accelerating Collaborative Cancer Research (ACCR) Grants close on May 23, 2019.
