chemoradiation

Treatment that combines chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

tomotherapy

A type of three-dimensional radiation therapy that allows the radiation beams to be shaped around a tumour more precisely.

brachytherapy

A type of radiation therapy treatment that implants radioactive material sealed in needles or seeds into or near cancerous cells. Also called internal radiation therapy.

multileaf collimators

Moveable pieces of metal built into the head of radiation therapy machines to shield normal tissue and organs from the radiation beam.

fraction

The individual, usually once daily, dose of radiation that makes up part of a course of radiation therapy treatment.

volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT)

A type of radiation therapy whereby single or multiple beams of radiation sweep around the body, greatly reducing treatment time….

active treatment

Treatment given to cure the cancer, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy. This does not include long-term treatment such as hormone medication, which may be taken for several years to maintain remission.

applicator

A tool that is used to insert a radiation source into the body for brachytherapy.

linear accelerator

A machine used in external radiation therapy to treat cancer.
