Cancer Council Queensland has kicked off a month of fundraising for Queenslanders with cancer with the launch of today’s Daffodil Appeal, ahead of the official Daffodil Day on Friday 28 August.
Queenslanders have the opportunity to donate online, buy a pin in advance or order a box of merchandise to sell during August to raise funds and awareness.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said Daffodil Day was one of the nation’s most iconic fundraisers.
“One in two Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime – that’s one in two too many,” Ms Clift said.
“During the Daffodil Appeal, Queenslanders have the opportunity to grow hope for those affected by donating a few dollars, buying or selling merchandise or registering to volunteer.
“From now, and throughout the whole of August, Queenslanders can get into the Daffodil Day spirit with a splash of yellow, making a difference to men and women touched by cancer.
“Every year, more than 25,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer, and about 8000 will die from the disease.
“All funds raised during the Daffodil Appeal, and on our official Daffodil Day, are invested into lifesaving cancer research, patient support services and prevention programs in Queensland.”
Queenslanders can also support the cause on social media by buying a daffodil pin, snapping a selfie and uploading the pic with the hashtags #daffodilday and #mydaffodilpin to raise awareness.
More than 800,000 fresh daffodils are expected to be sold on Daffodil Day in Queensland, along with pins, pens, keyrings and Dougal Bear merchandise.
“Whether you’re donating, uploading a selfie, sharing your story, volunteering or selling merchandise at your work or school – you will be making a difference to Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer,” Ms Clift said.
“Let’s don our brightest yellow during the Daffodil Appeal! Together, we can give hope to every person touched by the disease.”
Cancer Council Queensland hopes to raise $1.7 million during the Daffodil Appeal and on Daffodil Day, 28 August, this year.
