More than 15,000 Queenslanders have reached out to Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 for information and support this year, new figures show.
The latest data from Cancer Council’s information and support line 13 11 20, shows 34 per cent of local callers sought help with practical issues relating to cancer since January.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said 13 11 20 answered all questions about all cancers – from general information to psychological support, early detection, diagnosis and treatment.
“We’re pleased to see so many Queenslanders reaching out for practical and psychological cancer information and support,” Ms Clift said.
“More than 25,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the region each year alone, and about 8000 people die from the disease.
“Our figures show 26 per cent of all Queensland callers sought general information, and 17 per cent reached out for emotional and psychological support.
“36 per cent of local callers were diagnosed with cancer, 21 per cent were friends, family and carers, and 12 per cent were health professionals seeking information and advice.
“We’re particularly pleased to see the service reaching new people in the local community too – around 50 per cent of callers this year had never used 13 11 20 before.
“It’s crucial that every Queenslander affected by cancer has the confidence to reach out for advice, support, encouragement and referrals where needed.
“13 11 20 is staffed by fully qualified health professionals experienced in cancer support, who can offer tailored help to every local in the community.”
Queenslanders affected by cancer may also be referred to Cancer Council Queensland’s Cancer Counselling Service through 13 11 20.
CCQ’s Cancer Counselling Service operates at no out-of-pocket cost to the local community.

Since January, more than 15,000 calls have been made to Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 throughout Queensland.
Cancer Council Queensland is currently calling for community donations to its annual Christmas Appeal to help fund vital services such as 13 11 20.
