Daffodil Day set to deliver for all Queenslanders, all cancers

More than 220,000 Queensland cancer survivors will be honoured tomorrow on Friday August 25, marking 31 years since Queensland’s first Daffodil Day campaign.

Released by Cancer Council Queensland on the eve of Daffodil Day, the latest data confirms there are over 220,000 Queenslanders alive today after being diagnosed with cancer during the past 30 years – enough people to fill The Gabba five times.

In response, Cancer Council Queensland is calling for all Queenslanders to do what they can to bring the defeat of cancer closer by making a donation towards Queensland-based research and services.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said a cancer free future was within reach.

“If every Queenslander donated just $1 – we would have $4 million more to invest in world-leading research and clinical trials for people from across this great state,” Ms McMillan said.

“More Queenslanders are surviving a cancer diagnosis today than at any other time in history.

“Five-year relative survival rates for all types of cancer is higher than at any point in history – at around 70 per cent – an achievement that we’ve fought hard for and a fight that we will continue.

“Every donation towards Daffodil Day goes directly into saving lives and accelerating the pace of research so that we can defeat this disease.”

Last year Cancer Council Queensland invested $10.5 million into world-leading research projects, with a core focus on all Queenslanders, all cancers – delivering lifesaving research in Queensland, by Queenslanders, for the Queensland community.

“Simply by making a donation and wearing a pin, you can help bring us closer to a cancer free future for all Queenslanders,” Ms McMillan said.
