We have all been touched by cancer in some way. Sadly, I’ve lost members of my family to cancer – we’re working hard to ensure you don’t lose yours too.
As CEO of Cancer Council Queensland it’s my priority to increase investment into lifesaving research projects and improve service delivery across the state to help prevent this disease causing further devastation.
I also want every Queenslander, whether they live in Mount Isa or the Gold Coast, in rural or metro areas, to have the same level of service and access to treatments.
More than 27,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer each year and tragically, 8700 lose their life to the disease.
11 years ago I lost my mother-in-law to lymphoma. Our family was right by her side throughout her entire cancer journey, nursing her until she passed away.
No one should have to experience the pain and suffering of cancer.
When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, you ride that emotional roller coaster with them. I will never forget the terrifying uncertainty of going for blood tests, waiting to hear if it was a good or bad result, or being told that the treatment was no longer working effectively.
I’ve felt the hope, stress and grief of a cancer journey first hand – and have always wanted to do what I could to stop cancer devastating other families.
I’m sure you do too.
The good news is cancer survival rates are improving. Five-year relative survival rates for all types of cancer is the highest we’ve ever seen it – at around 70 per cent.
More Queenslanders are surviving a cancer diagnosis today than at any other time in history.
We will continue our quest to improve cancer survivorship across the state – knowing that cancer research is our only hope of beating this disease once and for all.
Last year Cancer Council Queensland invested $10.5 million into lifesaving research projects, focusing on a variety of cancer types from those commonly diagnosed, to those less prevalent, but still just as devastating.
Our researchers are at the forefront of cancer research, leading the way in the fight against cancer. Their work is saving lives.
Like the work of Professor Judith Clements, who has made breakthrough discoveries around how ovarian cancer spreads, and what genes and enzymes can be used to stop it.
The hope of a cancer free future spurs us on and is the reason we raise vital funds to invest back into cancer control measures.
With continued support from the community, will beat cancer.
