Australia Day – without the binge and burn

As millions prepare to give cricket a crack, fire up the barbie or head to the beach – Cancer Council is calling on Queenslanders to put a healthy spin on their Australia Day celebrations!

So, fill up your esky with hydrating drinks, swap your snags for lamb skewers and get your zinc on for a winning day.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said a few simple changes on Australia Day would guarantee a healthier and happier national celebration.

“We know that many Queenslanders look forward to Australia Day with anticipation, but it’s important to be prepared,” Ms Clift said.

“With temperatures set to peek across the state, Queenslanders can avoid the summer sizzle by using all five methods of sun protection when outdoors.

“Whether you plan to put on your pluggers or head to the beach or the park, remember to Slip, Slop, Slap Seek and Slide.

“Sun protection is required when the UV Index level is three or above – in Queensland that can be all year around from about 7.30am to 5pm.

“Once you have your SunSmarts sorted, plan a healthy menu to help you go the distance.

“Choose lean meat or vegetables for the barbie, swap your chips for veggie sticks, feast on fresh fruit, and avoid risky drinking, especially near water.

“Come up with a fitspo Aussie Day menu, get cracking, and beat the binge.

“Staying hydrated is also vital in soaring summer temperatures. Include adequate water in your esky, or other sugar-free bevvies.

“Work off your barbecue lunch with a game of backyard cricket or a bushwalk – boosting your physical and mental wellbeing.”

Ms Clift said healthy habits not only had positive benefits in the short term, but also in the long term.

“At least one third of all cancers can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices, including being active, eating well, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking and staying SunSmart,” Ms Clift said.

“Enjoy Australia Day the healthy way – your body and mind will thank you for it.”
