Understanding experiences and identifying needs of Queenslanders affected by cancer (UNIQUE)

At a glance

The Understanding experiences and identifying needs of Queenslanders affected by cancer (UNIQUE) project aims to improve cancer support services in Queensland by addressing the unmet needs of cancer survivors and caregivers. The project involves using a survey to understand survivorship experiences, mapping existing community-based services, evaluating current cancer support services, and co-designing new ones to fill service gaps. The project enhances access to high-quality, relevant care, ensuring no one must face cancer alone.

What do we know and what do we still need to learn?

Increasing cancer incidence and survival mean that more people than ever are living with the physical, emotional, social, financial, and practical challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis. Furthermore, family and friends who provide vital support to people with cancer often report feeling unsupported themselves. This situation demands the equitable delivery of high-quality, relevant, and accessible supportive cancer care, tailored to the diverse and expanding Australian population. This project aims to better understand the supportive care needs and experiences of cancer survivors and caregivers in Queensland. It will also enable improved connection between available cancer support services and those who need these services, and findings from this work will ensure that Cancer Council Queensland services remain contemporary and able to meet the needs of the Queensland cancer community.

What is the study?

The UNIQUE project (Understanding experiences and identifying needs of Queenslanders affected by cancer) includes codesign of surveys with the cancer community, partnership with the Queensland Cancer Registry to recruit Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer, collection of data that allows for comprehensive and deep understanding of needs of Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer, mapping of community-based support and allied health services and using findings from this work to improve existing services and creating new services to be delivered by Cancer Council Queensland.

Why is this project important?

The UNIQUE project will enhance the support available to Queenslanders impacted by cancer ensuring no one has to navigate cancer alone.
