Peer & group support

Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who understands.

When you’re facing cancer, either personally or while supporting someone you love, it can feel overwhelming. Peer support means you don’t have to go through it alone.

Our peer & group support programs, Cancer Connect and Women’s Connect , offer understanding, connection and a safe space to talk with people who have lived through similar experiences.

Whether you’re navigating treatment, adjusting to life after cancer or simply needing someone who just gets it, our trained peer mentors and support groups are here to listen, share and walk alongside you.

Cancer Connect

The Cancer Connect program offers free, confidential one-on-one phone support from trained peer mentors who understand what you’re going through.

As part of the program, you’ll be connected with a volunteer peer mentor who has been through their own cancer experience and are here to offer practical tips, emotional support, encouragement and insights.

We welcome people from all backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, LGBTQIA+ communities, people living with disabilities and those from diverse cultural backgrounds.

How Cancer Connect can support you

Facing cancer can feel overwhelming. While our peer mentors are not medical experts or counsellors, they can listen, share insights and provide support based on their own experiences. Topics you can talk about:

  • Your cancer diagnosis or caring for someone with cancer
  • Surgery, treatment, or side effects
  • Changes to your body
  • Feelings and worries
  • Impacts on your relationships
  • Work or lifestyle changes
  • Fear of cancer returning
  • Their own experiences

The conversation is guided by you, and you can stop at any time.

“When I was diagnosed, I felt incredibly isolated. There was a big age gap between me and others receiving treatment. Cancer Connect gave me the chance to speak with someone who had a similar lived experience. It gave me hope, and for the first time, I felt truly understood.”

– Cat, 33

“It was so lovely to have shared together with someone who gets it and can have a good laugh, and honour the times when life is heavy.”

– Queensland Cancer Connect participant

“They just get it. I felt less alone and so supported.”

– Queensland Cancer Connect participant

“I found my mentor to be a wonderful and understanding person. I felt that I developed a strong bond with them and I was actually quite sad when the phone calls came to an end.”

Women’s Connect

Women’s Connect, proudly funded by Queensland Health, is a peer support program, for women and non-binary people living with cancer across Queensland. It connects participants with others who have a deep understanding of what it’s like to live with cancer.
